Kevin and Bruce Sinclair of Newee Creek, Macksville, have been in partnership on the family dairy farm for the past 41 years. They have only ever supplied Norco and CDA (which was bought out by Norco). The shares they got from the buyout of CDA really helped them kick-start their farm to make it a successful dairy operation. They have always supplied Norco off the same farm, from the same dairy, but there have been a few changes along the way.
They are second generation dairy farmers and whilst Kevin worked off farm for 5 years before starting their partnership, Bruce has always worked on the family dairy. Kevin and his wife Gail also grew stone fruit on their 80 acres adjoining the farm for 20 years while they were milking.
Kevin and Bruce started milking 57 cows after they culled their father’s herd heavily and built up to 140 head at their peak a couple of years ago. The changes that they have made to remain sustainable have been
In doing so they stopped growing corn and started feeding pellets, which freed up time to focus on planting and maintaining more ryegrass with irrigation on the flats.
The dairy itself has seen a little modification with new machines installed but they have kept the vat their father put in in 1972, which cost the same as a new Holden car at the time!
Their biggest challenge has been finding quality relief milkers, due to the changing community’s focus away from dairy farming and therefore the struggling to get time away from the farm to recharge.
One thing that has not changed is their focus on milk quality. As their Milk Supply Field Officer it has been a pleasure to work with them over the years and see them produce outstanding quality milk, that has earned them yearly Norco Quality and CountDown DownUnder awards.
They are also long-term supporters of the Macksville Norco Rural Store and this has benefitted them via the Norco Rural / Agri Supplier Patronage Scheme
Kevin and Gail and Bruce and Julie finished dairy farming in December 2017 and will be missed within the Norco community.
We wish them all the best for their future endeavours.
